Here is how I distinguish it.  

PPC 601 processor  AND  Nubus based expansion slot

The reason I do so, is because there are plenty of other Macs that include
a 601 but have PCI slots (7200) or a 603 with Nubus (Performa 62xx).  The
first generation PPC processor itself was a 601, but since the 7200
included PCI, I don't think of it as 1st gen...

I usually clump the 6100, 7100, & 8100 in the 1st gen category.  I don't
think there was ever a 9100.  Possibly a AWS in a Q950 case with PPC, but
not a 9500 case...
