The 8500 was right on the heals of the 8100, but being it had major advances: PCI bus, 604(e) processors, etc. But, they weren't really in the same path. The 8100 is the PPC version of the Q800 and the 8500 is the PPC successor to the Q840AV. A much more capable machine...
Are you on Vancouver Island? You might do well to come down here to shop for a machine. One or more local organization has recently dumped a lot of 8500s and 9500s on the used market.
