I think you have to tell Appletalk to use the printer port.
Deleting the preferences, or switching it off, doesn't accomplish this.
Go to Appletalk control panel, select "Connect via Printer port"
(If that's the port you're using) and close.

I would probably switch the printer off and on again to help
"clear" the problem but this may not be necessary. Your
Print Monitor hangs because it's confused about where to go
with the print job. Once you've set AT to Printer port, it should
be OK.
