MkLinux: forget it, PPC only. A/UX is quite interesting, but not very useful, as it is about 10 years out of date (it's based on SVR2, which should tell you something about how current it is. It'll work fine for an X-terminal, though.) Your best bet (IMHO) is either Debian GNU/Linux or NetBSD, both of which are quite happy on 68k Macs >2. Those upgrades cards from Sonnet, Newer, etc. Do they work with any >of >the above Unixes? I think that a PPC upgrade would definitely give *nix some problems, but doing something like sticking a faster 68040 (NOT 68LC040) in the system should work just fine. If you want a PPC, your best bet is buying a "real" PCI Power Mac (they're only around $30-50 or so) and just sticking *nix on that. >3. I don't know about A/UX, but Linux and BSD support partition sizes up to about 144 terabytes on 32-bit platforms (like your Centris 650). >5. Where can I shop for video Ram, RAM, and video cards for this machine? Try the swap list. >Comments, criticisms, are appreciated. Let us know what you end up getting working; "Unsupported" *nix on a Mac (especially a 68k) is quite interesting, and also please share any tips or tricks you learn with us.
