Even at 640x480 it's probably more than double it's native TV 
resolution. According to a bit of googling I did NTSC has a standard 
scan line number of 525 and a ratio of 4:3 so has an effective 
resolution of 700x525 (or 525 by 300 if my maths is screwed) which 
means it needs to be fiddled about with quite a lot to fit it into 
640x480 (actually reduced or increased - I don't remember which). 
Early TV cards used compression to get the mass of pixels to the 
screen at a reasonable speed too meaning the picture may contain 
compression artifacts as I doubt it is loss-less compression.
