Also, it seems that I must plug these devices into specific positions along
the cable, which has positions for 4 devices plus what I take to be a
terminator which is plugged into the 5th position, or the floppy disk plus
question mark icon appears.

I've removed termination from all the devices (the previous owner had left it
enabled on the original drive) and checked that all have individual IDs (the
original drive is 0, the second drive is 1 and the CDROM is 3).

Can anyone help me preserve what's left of my hair please?

The terminator MUST be in the last cable position, and all drives MUST be
unterminated.

The Q950 will accommodate these configurations:

1) without the infamous "five drive tray", floppy plus three drives of any
size (two hard drives of any size plus an optional CD-ROM or DDS-1/2 tape, if
the bottom front expansion bay is not used for a hard drive),

2) with the infamous "five drive tray", floppy plus optional CD-ROM or
DDS-1/2 tape, plus five 1.6" high 3.5" hard drives.

The Q950's power supply is designed to accommodate four drive power cables,
each of which has two drive power connectors. The front one usually has just
one power connector, however, for a total of seven drive power connectors.

The very similar WGS 9150 mounts the floppy in the basement of its case, so
both front expansion bays can be used for drives. Therefore, the WGS 9150
power supply can accommodate four drive power cables, each of which has two
drive power connectors and the front one usually has both power connectors
for a total of eight drive power connectors.
