That would seem to be the case then, since the cable I have will only take a
max of 4 devices.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply, at least I'm satisfied that there's nothing
out of the ordinary with the setup despite the results that I was
receiving.

I managed to get the CD ROM going again after reinstalling its driver and I
must have let the magic smoke out from the second drive somehow :-(
