Both use hard disk space for virtual memory. RAM Doubler simply doesn't
make the available disk space go down by the amount of VM used, which is
kinda silly anyway, because the most disk space needed for VM *should* be
the amount of VM minus the amount of RAM. Apple's VM scheme takes out a
chunk of HD space the size of VM itself. RAM Doubler has some other way to
map the VM to the hard disk that doesn't rely on [insert size here]-sized
chunks of hard disk space being available.

After 8.1. RAM Doubler was still marginally faster with 8.1, but around
8.5 (maybe 8.6), Apple's VM speed got up to par with RAM Doubler's.

For machines where I'm running a bit tight on hard disk space, or machines
where I can't select something other than the boot volume for VM, I prefer
RAM Doubler. For machines with plenty of HD space but little RAM and OS
8.5 or higher, I prefer Apple's scheme.
