Thanks pickle, I think I'll try that. I took the back off (that's a b*gger to
figure out) the one that was OK when warmed-up, and found that that stopped it
warming up enough to "gimmme some red". So I got my wife's hairdryer (!) and
blasted hot air at the CRT-end PCB. The red returned!
So you are right about the location of the problem and could well be right about
the solder joints. The only discouragement is the amount of de-soldering you
have to do to just *get* at that PCB :-( I think I'll take some pictures with my
digital camera so I can see how it goes back together. I guess this is why they
*don't* have a decent service manual.
BTW Did Apple ever make a Color Portrait Monitor? I always thought that the
Portrait monitor was a sensible idea. I don't understand why all monitors are
not made this way. Takes up less desk space and is more like the shape of a page
of paper. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone that has one.
