Well,

here's the thing. The drive needs to have a low-level format "forced"
upon it - nothing I've tried works, and I've tried about 9 things
running all the way back to HD Toolkit 1.1, ca 1992.

Apparently when the system froze up in the midst of formatting, the
indication of where the "end of the drive" is was lost. I'm
paraphrasing. But Seagate says that gets put down at the end of a
low-level format. So right now this drive is "there" on the bus, but
contains 0 blocks.

This Seatools thing cn force a format (like they'd do at the factory,
I imagine).

I have a Q950 sitting there. Debian has a "mini-boot CD" for both 68K
and PowerPC. So why not boot and install Linux and then run Seatools?
"It's a ummm, yeah, a Learning Experience".

So here are some questions for Scott, with apologies as I've already
read through much of the Debian web pages and don't necessarily
understand all of it.

1. http://www.phy.olemiss.edu/debian-cd/ contains .iso image files
of some small (ca 190M) boot/install CDs. I've already got
woody-m68k1-.iso and woody-powerpc-1.iso on a CD (as files, not as CD
images, just as they came over the net).

2. http://www.debian.org/CD has an FAQ which claims that these files
can be opened and burned using Toast or Disk Copy. Tried Toast Lite,
which is what I have, no dice.
Tried Disk Copy -- the flavor that comes with System 9.2 -- no dice.

3. I can only xfer these files using IE 5.x. Have they been somehow
scrambled in transmission, for these apps won't recognize them? The
FAQ hints that the DL should be set to Binary. Fine, I know how to do
this with Fetch but not with Internet Exploder.

4. I tried everything I could think of the FTP them via Fetch but
could not get that directory.

So ... what am I missing here ...

If we can get this far we can then proceed on this Seatools lark.
