I asked: > >Anybody know if there is s/w available to run a Q950 as an X-windows terminal?
Ian replied (well snipped) > Better - there's a thing called MIX, which I have also used on windows - and > there's apparently a 68k mac port. It is produced by http://www.microimages.com, > and is free. > The 68k port has disappeared from their website, > I googled and found it at http://www.orgchm.bas.bg/pub/xwindows/mix/ I googled (is that really a word?) also but only found a version of that for PPC and OS 9.X. However your link worked and I have tried it out on an LC475 (with FPU), 'cos it was easier to carry to work than the Q950 :-P It seems to run OK, but in my ignorance of things UNIX, I can't seem to get it to work. The "instructions" are obviously written for "geaks"! <smug mode on> It's my opinion that Apple product generally appeal to the opposite type of people - i.e. those that want to actually DO something with their computer. <smug mode off> The instructions say to lanuch (their spelling) MI/X, do some setups (I'm still OK). Then they say you have to "telnet to your host" to give a UNIX command: setenv DISPLAY your.Macs's.IP.number:0.0 So I wasn't sure if I can telnet through MI/X or if I have to use a seperate program. So I used a seperate telnet program and did as they said. But when I run my target UNIX app (as per internal work instructions) I get: XView warning: Cannot load font '-b&h-lucida-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-*-*' (Fo nt package) XView warning: Cannot load font '-b&h-lucida-medium-r-normal-sans-*-120-*-*-*-*- *-*' (Font package) XView error: Cannot open connection to window server: 172.16.3.183:0.0 (Server p ackage) BTW "172.16.3.183" is the IP address my IT guys gave my desktop Mac (usually a Classic II running 6.0.8L :-) Any pointers? I did find Sales blurb for MacX 2.0.4 which says it will work on either 68K or PPC and supports open transport. Requires 68030 upwards and OS 7.1 and up. The document was dated 1998. Sounds kinda cool. Anybody got it? Anybody know where to get it? I might even pay for it :-) cheers, John -- Quadlist is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
