Yes you do have to use a separate telnet program to setup the 
connection.  It's not an issue of MI/X but the weird way that 
XWindows is setup.  The XWindows Server is the machine running MI/X 
or other X terminal software.  The client is the Unix machine you are 
attempting to access.  Don't ask me why, it's just the way it is.

This sounds like a problem with configuration on X on your Unix machine.

You can also try the following (without the setenv command).

xterm -display your.Macs's.IP.number:0.0 &

Or something like it.  Check the man page for xterm.  The above 
command is from memory so it may not be correct. This should bring a 
terminal session up on the XWindows machine.   The "&" at the end 
spawns the process off, otherwise your telnet session waits for your 
XTerm session to end.

You can do this with any other X command but xterm lets you start 
doing other things from the XWindows screen.
