FWIW, the best I could ever do with MI/X were the same error messages quoted
above.

I don't know where you'd find MacX. But do a Google search for info on
"eXodus 7.0", which IIRC was the final release to support '020 - '040 68k
Macintosh. It's an X-windowing system for Macintosh and is a commercial app.
which you can DL and try as a working demo (can be registered to make a full
app).

Version 7.0 is getting hard to locate, but I believe this is it here:
