Here's a tip some might find useful. Use the cable from an Apple 15" 
multiscan (those monitors that have the reputation for bad solder joints 
on the gun - Apple had a replacement policy extended way beyond their 
warranty expirey date). This cable has the correct fitting for attaching 
to a Mac to plain vanilla PC monitors. Using a similar spec multisync PC 
monitor works a treat, your Mac thinks it has a Mac 15" multiscan. No 
adaptors or dip switches involved. Nice.

However, In your case Steve, I would guess that your monitor is on the 
blink and not the adaptor. Test if you can, with a known good monitor.
