How about changing the build system (configure.ac I assume) to just use
always C99 mode?

I thought a later commit fixed the c99 issue (Or you changed the
loop?). Not sure which commit this would be. Potentially adding this
commit to the set of pull req 17 should fix it.
Yes, there's a later one that does.
Just, in general, I bet this won't be the last of having the CI fail
cause someone used a C99 construct (and we require some C99
constructs, but GCC accepts some in C89 and errors on others).
