While a friend and I were replacing the drive shaft and wheel bearing
on the front near side of my wife's 1800 Zetec H4, we noticed that the
engine and gearbox were pushed sideways when rotating the wheel with
the suspension at full droop. Having taken the drive shaft off, it has
become apparent that there is only just enough space between the
gearbox flange and the inside of the wheel bearing for the shaft to
fit when fully compressed. When the suspension droops, the tripod
joint bottoms out and this causes the movement.
The new drive shaft is a couple of mm longer when fully compressed, so
it would be in compression when fitted. Has anyone else with an XR2i/
1800-based H4 see this before?
The problem would probably not afflict anything else as the hubs and
drive shafts are smaller (as I know because my parts supplier has so
far managed to give me both the wrong drive shaft (first thing I had
to return), and wrong wheel bearing (claimed to match the new, correct
diameter and number of splines, drive shaft), which is why I have to
go back again tomorrow!)
