Eddie,

As the demand for improved durability and longer oil change intervals led to
improved engine design and materials the quality of the oil had to improve as
well as clearances became smaller and the lubricative properties of the oil had
to cope with thinner oil films, provide higher oil film strength and work with
higher local temperatures. This required increased levels of detergency to
keep the carbon in solution and not pack around the engine.

Experience suggests that it is better to stay with whatever grade that has been
used up until now in the engine regardless of who made it etc., preferably an
oil in line with the original engine manufacturers recommendations. If the
engine has been used consistently with a higher grade then stick with it else
you will suddenly find that the engine has gone back to the ways in which it
was expected to behave and this might be a shock for the clearances etc. If
you up the grade and increase the level of detergency, the oil will effectively
spring clean your engine and a lot of the packed carbon that has achieved a
state of equilibrium in your engine will be removed leading to a noisy engine
whilst conversely a lower grade removes less carbon from around the engine.

One further comment, since this is a turbo engine, the oil grade is more likely
to have been set for the turbo as this runs very hot around the bearings as the
oil is used as the only way to get heat away from the shaft and to form the
thrust cushion required to control end float on the shaft and rotor assembly.
This is why oil pump flow capacity has to be increased with turbo engines as
the turbo demands so much oil.

See Martin Scott's recommendations for actual Ford recommended grade.

Subject: [Quantum Owners] 2+2 oil selection

Hello all, I have just rebuilt my 2+2's RS turbo engine after the
Curborough oil leak fiasco, new crank bearings, big end bearings,
piston rings, cam shaft all seals and gaskets etc etc and cannot find
any reliable sources of info about what oil to use once its back in
the car. Depending on which RS owners club blog you read depends on
what oil to use or not to use. I was running Magnatec 10W 40 and until
most of the oil decided to leave the engine via the turbo feed hose.
Up until that I hadn't had any cause for concern. It coped with
Bruntigthorpe and Haynes ok along with some enthusiastic on road
driving. Any sugestions would be very welcome.

  Best regards
  Eddie Cooper
