1. Check your coolant level.

My mondeo would speed up the engine to counter a power drain. - The cooling
fan was constantly running, the thermostat was only sensing air because
head gasket was leaking. whilst on idle this constant running fan would
drain the battery so the ECU ups the revs to compensate.

2. There is a small rubber T behind the coil pack that perishes this
lets in air to the mixture and upsets the ECU. See posted pic.

weird things to idle.

Hope this helps.

It's not your fan kicking in is it? (or some other load starting)

If the engine is causing the car to shudder (as in physically detectable by
some form of motion) then it must be speeding up or slowing down. The XR2
rev counters are pretty inaccurate anyway and doubtful you'd notice them
change reading as they don't move fast enough. I can see such things on my
2+2 when I have the laptop connected to the ECU but can't tell on the XR2
rev counter.

There is no visable change in revs on the revometer. It just feels like a
little shugger?

In theory it shouldn't shudder. Are the revs hunting or is it almost
stalling then recovering? My 1800 used to hunt by 200 rpm or so and I can't
remember if I fixed it or not. Certainly it did something a bit odd and
resetting the ECU sorted it out once.

When my zetec is on idle i can feel the engine shugger every now and again.
More when i sit still for longer. Its maybe about once every 7 seconds? Is
this normal? Why does it do it?
Thanks
Stuart
