Two shiny new red springs (2+2 special from Quantum, last ones in the shop!) now adorn the struts of the 2+2 and have successfully raised the front end by around an inch and a half after they've been round the block a couple of times to settle. Now I can go over road humps without the comedy slow-down-to-3mph and breathe in act.
Sorted the problem with the alternator/battery light: poor contact to the bulb in the dash foil. Now the alternator charges before the engine gets to 4000 rpm. Also, while in there, temporary fixes to both indicator bulbs and the two left-hand instrument lights: same fault on all of them - the foil is so fragile it's difficult to get a good contact. I can't see a way to fix this short of a new instrument pack or a new foil - anyone know if they're still available? Also there's a dodgy earth on that pack so e.g. the handbrake light dims as the indicators come on... I suppose I *could* do something creative with LEDs, glue, and some small circuit boards - except for the alternator bulb of course. Also managed to find a dodgy switch (actually, I think more of the famous dubious soldering which plagues this car) which is why the passenger's electric window didn't. And went to Halfords (daughter needed new brake bulbs) and had a laugh at the gear knobs - either crap, chav, expensive, or all three. Grrr. But not a bad day's work, I think.
