I would suspect that when they swapped from the metal to the plastic
inlet manifold that they also changed spec of some of the other parts,
especially the injectors and MAF.
They certainly did on the 1.8 Zetec when it went from the metal to
plastic inlet manifolds.
If you've now got a mixture of the new and the old parts then things
won't work very well.
I would have kept the metal inlet manifold and all sensors and fitted
that onto the new engine.
You should also have the air temperature sensor, the ecu uses it to
compensate the mixture.
It should have been on the inlet manifold on the alloy manifold and was
probably in the airbox or the air intake pipe on the new engine.

Hi all,
I recently swapped my 1600 zetec engine (1996) for a slightly newer ,
also 1996 engine, but there are some differences.
The intakemanifold on the old engine is alloy, the newer is plastic.
The swap took a while, but everything went in place. Only an intake
air temp sensor was not connected because there used to be none.
All went well, but after a drive on the motoway i noticed lack of
power. On the return journey the engine rocked about at 30mph. When
climbing in the revs on full throttle, it staggers at 4000rpm.
Releasing the throttle a bit "releases"more power and it climbes to
6500 rpm smoothly. It's hard to describe, because it doesn't happen
all the time.
What can it be?
The oxygen sensor replaced(coulored red , due to additives (?)
accoring to Bosch.
Tried old throttle position sensor on newer throttlehousing.
Tried to replac the airmass sensor, but not yet possible due to
"plumbing"problems...
Tried resetting the computer.
Does any zetec specialist have a clue?
Regards,
Rolf
