Thanks for your really speedy (no pun intended) reply. The short answer is that
no, the speedo has not been stored the wrong way up....I've never taken it off
the car.  The speedo was sent to a guy up north for some kind of repair before
I bought the car...last Summer, I believe and apparently it had been working
fine until the day I got it...when it wasn't working at all. The previous owner
told me that the prescribed repair was to remove approx 1 sixteenth of an inch
from the inner of the cable at the speedo end (?) . This he had done, and
"until today it's been fine".
Following my replacement of the cable, drive....in fact everything else,  It
does at least work, now, a bit !

Is it possible that this problem may resolve itself over time as the clocks
are now the right way up ?
If I eventually need to replace the clocks, if I am careful to make sure that I
stand the replacement speedo  the right way up for a time...say 48 hours (?)
before fitting....will that be long enough to solve this problem?

Has the speedo been stored off the car ?
They need to be stored the correct way up as there is a viscious fluid around
the shaft to damp it but if the speedo is stored the wrong way up the fluid
slowly runs out of it's correct location and gives too much or not enough
damping.
