The Scimitar GTE crossed my mind as well - a good looking car, but not
much room inside due to the low roofline.
I envisage a Quantum Estate would be a bit shorter but taller -
exactly the same length and height as the existing saloon in fact.
Being a lot lighter it wouldn't need a thirsty V6 to haul it around,
and no problems with A30 front suspension trunnions!

More like the Mazda 323F, but with a more vertical rear screen and
infilled sides.
Some SAAB Aeros illustrate the sort of lines I'm thinking of, too.

Most of the modifications could be done with an existing shell -
remove the rear parcel shelf, cut away the area below the window, the
back part of the roof, and blend in the new bodywork from around the B-
posts backwards.
An existing bootlid would make the bottom half of the estate door.
Keep the lip across the back between the rear wings, cut across the
bootlid between the lip and the "water trap" and mount a more vertical
rear screen above that.
Fill in the missing sides with suitably shaped windows, ideally, ones
which are designed to hinge open a little on over-centre catches, like
a lot of small shopping cars.
This both provides ventilation, and gets rid of the problem of the
window bonding delaminating.

Possibly accentuate the lines with a styling lip/cue at the rear of
the roofline, being careful not to make it look too much like an
Allegro Estate.

Front end would remain completely unchanged, apart from the additional
width in the engine bay.

There you go, an easy conversion for somebody of your talents!
