It's a Diesel, therefore no coil.
Unless the glow plug relay is faulty and supplying power to the glow
plugs continiously then it wouldn't have damaged those.
If they were on all the the the battery would have been flat.
I can't think of anything on a diesel that would be effected by leaving
the ignition on.
But i had a 1800 Fiesta Diesel and it stopped starting one day for no
reason, turned out to be the injector pump decided to stop sucking up fuel.
To reason why it worked in the morning and didn't in the evening.
Loosen one of the the injector nuts and see if you are still getting fuel.

Hiya
May have burnt out the coil - disconnect - then use an Ohm meter to
beep out

Oh dear I am wondering if I have blown something. Was working on the
car, just changing water and anti-freeze, (MK2 saloon/1800 non turbo
diesel) and I think I may have left the ignition on for an hour and a
half. Car will now not start, won't even fire at all. Will this have
damaged something? Glow plug warning light still lights up and engine
turns over fine, don't seem to have knocked any wires off
