Colin's Q Coupe sprained a fetlock two weeks ago and we found it was one of the rear brake cylinders leaking past the seal into the drum. Cylinders £11 each and axel set of shoes for £20, plus brake fluid. So the axel set renewed for around £47. How much in a garage? £300 maybe?

Thought that was good so got some extra cylinders for the rear of the 2+2 come service time for a bit of preventative maintenance - mine have been on the car for over 10 years so far. :-)

Checking the figures and he has been using the Qoupe for his only transport for four years now and it has cost just over £2000, including purchase, for all mechanical running costs. (i.e. Plus the usual petrol, tax and insurance) Very good, as he saved more than that on the four years club insurance at £353 per year for 21+ year olds. Now he qualifies for the £175 and is still very pleased with it. The plan is to start the major renovation late this year.

Relatively speaking, this sounds quite reasonable against the quote that my son had from Toyota for the replacement of all disks and pads at a cost of £720, after having a standard service on his relatively new MPV to keep up the service record !!!! We did the job in less than 2 hours including changing the brake fluid for a parts cost of ~£170. Heavens knows what a head gasket would have cost at these rates. A friend down the road paid a similar sum to have their Peugeot 207 brakes serviced. Talk about daylight robbery - there must be a very stringent insurance payment to cover each job to warrant such high costs as the fitters do not get that rate.

£800 is a lot of money for a head gasket. I did mine last year and the parts were £20 (head set and set of bolts), Plus antifreeze, oil and filter. Labour wise I spent about 8 hours which included valve lapping and head decoking. A garage should be able to do it in a lot less time as I'm well out of practise.

Just got it back from the garage.
All fixed, so I’m now £800 lighter.

Confirmed by the bloke at the garage this morning, it's the head gasket.
