cheers for the reply Jim, i may have it figured out now

it looks like a previous owner had been a bit ham fisted (odd since
its usually me that breaks things)  and not had the center lug aligned
properly when latching the catches which has led to the angle plate
bending in and breaking the fiberglass structure on the header rail
leading to the center point riding up the screen top and not sitting
flush.
 i have made a new wider catch today from stainless steel and riveted
and bonded it to the header rail, it certainly feels secure but i have
yet to try to fasten it yet before the adhesive sets, maybe tomorrow.
