Thanks for the reply. I've done a little bit more reading but was so
cheesed off with it breaking down on me so soon after all that time
spent cleaning and polishing for Stoneleigh that I haven't done much
else. It's also led to yet another one of those awkward 'Why don't you
get rid of....' conversations with my wife.

I realised I'd not given much detail in the original post but to be
honest I thought it had been lost in the ether as it didn't appear in
this group until today. I guess the moderators were all busy planning
for Stoneleigh too. Anyway, here's the extra detail:

My car was built by 'old Quantum' at Stourbridge (it's their old demo
model) so I'd hope that it was amongst the better put together
examples. I can confirm I'm on carbs and am pretty sure there's no
PATS system as the pump is usually running if the ignition is in
position 2. It doesn't do the on-and-then-off thing you described.
The pump is separate to the tank on my Q and seems to have come off
its supporting bracket which maywell be a contributing factor although
nothing seems to be out of place, frayed or loose. You were also right
about road dirt - the thing is pretty filthy...

I've also been reading about a fuel cutout switch in the passenger
footwell so I'll be looking at that and the relay you mentioned as the
next things. In all honesty I was looking at just sticking on a new
pump as a quick fix so that I'd still be able to make it to
Stoneleigh. Now I have time to troubleshoot properly as the deadline
is a year away!
