Hi, finished now. 24 hours WD40 and still the bleed nipples would
only round off. So I ended up hacksawing them off. Then the proper
10 mm brake pipe spanner would fit and unscrewed OK. Mounting bolts
likewise with a good socket. So new rear cylinders fitted with
replacement shoes and all back on the road again.
Found that the brake pipes were 10 mm. The mounting bolts 10 mm and
some manufacturers have bleed nipples that are 11 mm hex and others 10
mm. So that's bound to cause a bit of confusion!
It's also interesting that the cylinder dimensions are so small that
the bleed nipples have to be removed to get a spanner over the brake
pipes. Otherwise you are back to an open ended spanner with a 1/16th
of a turn available. Fine if they are fresh.

Don't use an open ended spanner or if you have to use a good quality
one. best to use a proper brake pipe spanner or brake pipe socket.

Yes they are 11 mm on calipers or sometimes 10mm Fords went
totally metric in approx 1972 so I would look for a six sided
socket and pray. Good luck it could be worse as Peugeots use 6mm
with a 6 mm thread in alloy calipers.............no chance except
to break.

Subject: [Quantum Owners] Brake spanner sizes
Can anyone confirm the correct size spanner for the 2+2 (i.e. ford
fiesta) brake pipe connectors? I thought they were 11mm but maybe
they are old UK size?
Also the correct spanner size for the rear brake cylinder mounting
bolts? I thought they were 10mm but maybe mine have rusted smaller
as
they seem loose with a 10 mm spanner! I am having to soak them in
freeing fluid as they have been on of 10 years.
Thanks
Derek
