A trick I've sometimes used with GRP is to shine a strong light behind the object which shines through the gelcoat of the GRP and shows exactly where to mark (if that makes sense) - May be useful? ----- Original Message ----- From: Hamish Freeman To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, July 21, 2011 12:03 PM Subject: RE: [Quantum Owners] H4 towbar
Hi, Yes – I cut a hole the ”exact” size of the drawbar in the bumper. This required some judicious marking out followed by a pilot hole in the middle of the area of the proposed aperture. Remember the old adage ”measure twice (or more!) and cut only once” to avoid an unsightly gaping hole around the drawbar. It is possible to project the edge of the drawbar back onto the inside of the bumper with a piece of flat steel held inside the flange and this helps a lot.. It is the exact height that takes a bit of judgement but the advice here is to assemble the drawbar without the bumper and reference its position off something that will be accessible once the bumper is in place. Apologies if this is “teaching you to suck eggs” but I have seen some really bad examples in the past from thse who should know better. The reason I changed the drawbar was to avoid it being too high and too far away from the car as the drawbar holes on mine were 12 mm, a challenge to drill with a low powered drill whilst my Bosch Li-Ion drill tends to snap 10 mm drills if they snag and will not accept 12 mm. Good luck! Do you happen to know what year of Mondeo the tow bar came from Tks Andy --- On Thu, 14/7/11, Hamish Freeman <[email protected]> wrote: From: Hamish Freeman <[email protected]> Subject: RE: [Quantum Owners] H4 towbar To: [email protected] Date: Thursday, 14 July, 2011, 13:44 Hi, Yes my tow-bar is based on a Mondeo Estate drawbar attached each side via its fixed flanges to a piece of heavy duty 2"angle iron to the underside of the boot structure and secured by a mirror image piece of angle iron on the inside of the boot by 3 off M10 bolts each side from memory. The spacing was highly fortuitous in that it did not encroach on the inner boot space and formed a useful divider to keep stuff to either side of the boot. The carpet fitted exactly between the two pieces of angle iron. I have pulled stuff way beyond the expected capability of the boot floor (it is quite thick!) with no apparent distress after what must be approaching 10 years. The H4 is firmly held together and hence it is possible to expect the fibre glass to be used for load bearing. I would not even think of doing such things on my Beauford, where the body was designed to be held on to the chassis by only 2 off M6 bolts at the rear. IVA changed all of that!!! The only thing I changed from the Mondeo unit was the actual tow ball attachment square tube as the Mondeo unit put the ball at the wrong height. I just happened to have an identical sized unit from a Fiat X19 unit that I had saved for posterity that was ideal. At one stage I sent a photo spread of the manufacture of the above to one of the former editors but it probably was not of interest at the time for QM. In our present circumstances it is doubtful whether I can find the photos in a reasonable time as they would be on a backup somewhere. I might be able to get the car on ramps sometime in the future when the pressure has eased off in pricing up our possessions for the insurance company in order to get money to refurnish our house. Hope this is of help, Hamish -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Steve Kodz Sent: 13 July 2011 13:40 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Quantum Owners] H4 towbar Andy, Yes it is possible, but I don't have any details. The only person I know who has fitted a towbar to an H4 is Hamish, who might be able to reply a bit later, however he is not the only person who has done it.. It could be worth a call to Eddie Ruskin at Quantum Kit Cars as he may have further information.
