I have every confidence in Jim's advice on these matters but could I ask
for clarification of what was meant when it was said that 'the brakes were
very soft and I was getting little braking effort from them.

Does soft mean that there was a lot of movement on the pedal?

In my experience of master cylinder failures the pedal effort to get the
brakes to work gets harder if there is no assistance from the servo.

When my local garage tested one of my cars for the MOT they used a test
which involved using the brakes two or three times after the engine had been
switched off to detect whether there was residual assistance from the servo.

Brake bleeding - in my experience this is rarely easy on Quantum's. I have
found that what works best for me is to use a pressurised brake bleeding
kit that uses air pressure from a spare wheel to feed brake fluid into the
system and force any trapped air out.

Hope you get sorted soon.

Michael
