To finish this one off, changing the pump.sorted the problem. There is
a known problem with the seals on the throttle damper, which is
a.plastic unit with a round covered diaphragm, from the outlet (top)
of the pump to the delivery pipe out through the mounting disk. It
turned out that the plastic outlet spigot on the pump had broken off -
the edges of the two pieces showed that it had been cracked for a
while, which probably led to a drop in pressure at the fuel rail. The
car runs much better with a replacement pump (there had been a
hesitation between 1500 and 2000 rpm which is now absent).
I only found this on taking the pump and gauge sender to bits, as the
two parts were pushed together by the assembly....
