The cam timing would just need setting in the normal way - as long as there was sufficient adjustment in the system (either by setting an adjustable pulley, or the tensioner taking up the slack) the belt should be long enough. My memory fails me, but I think you'll have a sprung tensioner. A vernier shouldn't be needed on a zetec because the pulleys aren't keyed on IIRC.

Stupid question, but if you use a decompression plate will it affect the cam timing by putting extra length between the crank and the cam pulleys?

Would you need adjustable pulleys to correct it?

The head gasket was a Focus RS gasket, these are multipart steel shim type gaskets and good for lots of power, also available in several thickness. I had problems on my ZVH with Felpro gaskets failing between cylinders about once a year, change the the Focus RS one and no problems since.

notice Ferriday use aluminium and another company I talked to at the
Autosport show yesterday used stainless.  I can see arguments for and
against both, so Matthew do you remember what material yours was?
