I'd read recently that HID takes a few minutes until full brightness too. HF fluro starts and is almost full brightness very quickly (at least my daylight tubes in the office do)
I'd always disliked HID on other cars - they seem to be very dazzling, however I've been driving a car with them fitted the last couple of weeks and it's easier to see with them so from driver point of view they are good.
