Yep, I've had the same problem on a couple of cars. Replaced the Bosch starters with some Ford ones from 1.8 Sierras, which seemed a bit more substantial. Sounds like a heat shield might be a good idea.
Although, you could wrap the exhaust with the fibreglass stuff that seems quite popular now, which is supposed to keep the whole bay cooler. Anyone have any opinions on that stuff? Dave.
