The big hint on 2+2 front shocks is to release the top nut with the weight on the wheels; that way the damn thing will actually come off (you don't need to remove it completely until you want them off).
You may need an impact wrench - airgun or similar - to get the second nut off; it's been a pain on occasion for me.
