An annoying feature has reared its head on my H4. I have been aware that the temperature gauge has been reading lower and lower values of late and finally decided to do something about it for if it were true then I would be running permanently on the Cold Map (= ~ 7 mpg) and I have noted an increase in consumption.
Yesterday I removed the thermostat and the two temperature sensors and tested them in the time honoured way in a saucepan over the gas hob. The thermostat works fine if a bit low on opening i.e. when the water just starts to bubble before boiling. The ECU switch changes state at ~ 40°C which is correct. The temperature sensor drops from 10’s of K when cold to ~500R at ~90°C which seems reasonable. Is there anything else that I have missed before undertaking the slog of getting at the instruments? If my memory serves me well after 12 years since I built the car, I guess the meter contacts and slide over PCB are the prime targets now.
