Hi,

Maybe the following is a bit apple pie and motherhood but here goes anyway:

What tyres have you fitted? On my H4 I started off with Pirelli P700's and
whilst they were OK in the dry these were definitely Death on Wheels in the
wet. I then went to (Bridgestone) Potensa's for many years until I moved to
15" wheels with large profile tyres to get the gearing right. Surprisingly
these have given excellent handling and indistinguishable wear over ~ 5 k
miles. Tyre pressures are critical and 32 front and 30 rear (in Druid units
lb/in^2) have worked for me - do not go too low as you do not get the crown
of the tyre working effectively for you

Regarding the front lower suspension bushes, this is a known problem of MkII
Fiestas to the extent that there is a kit to replace the bushes for a few
pounds each available from motor factors without the need to replace the
arms. They can be driven out in a vice using a large socket as a drift.
About 10k miles is the best one might expect from a set of bushes in my
experience and a regular replacement for the MOT.

The last time I assembled the tracking rods into the steering arm swivels
there was about 25-30 mm of thread in each swivel. You need 2x dia of
thread engagement to be safe and 3x dia to be sure of durability.

The front wheel bearings are the angular contact type so there is no
adjustment but do check that the wheel cannot wobble at the bearings - 1 to
2 mm max movement at the periphery of the tyre is all that should be
allowed.

Is the rack and steering column OK? Lock the steering and see if you can
move the wheels.

One further thing to check is that the suspension bits that are attached to
the fibreglass are bolted on tight. It is very unlikely that they have come
loose as they are held on by large diameter bolts that in my case locked up
tight as taken the final turns to securing the hardware.

Good luck!

Hamish

Subject: [Quantum Owners] Tracking on H4 concerns

Hi learnerd quantum owners, last year while travelling to the stoneliegh
show the handling on our H4 became shall I say interesting, lifting the
throttle would have the car pulling to the right, anyhow we got there and
home again in one piece and I found that the near side bottom suspension arm
rubbers were cracking up allowing the steering to wonder. The arm was
changed and the tracking set, fast forward 12 months, recently the front end
of the car has become vague it shimmies like a hula girls hips when I
accelerate and one checking the tracking it was way out, I looked at both
bottom arms again , these were fine both looking like new and nothing else
suspicious was seen. The tracking has been reset and both track rods are
showing almost the same amount of threads, both very close to 29mm. Does
anyone know how long the threaded end is, I could always unscrew one of mine
but now the trackings set I don't want to disturb it unless I have to, so if
anyone has one on the bench I would be grateful for the information, I don't
really want to drive it when there may only be a few mm holding it together.
Many thanks guys.
