Agree its unlikely that the MOT Tester will / can change the limits on the test
- its all computer driven these days...
If it really is a problem - it might be worth checking the age of the engine
and speaking with the DVLA to see if you can get the records updated and a new
Emissions limit set
BUT it might not be a quick process.

The date of manufacture of the engine block is cast on engine in big numerals,
eg. 84, 88 etc.

Took one of our Saloons in for an MOT
Its a D plate and V5C says it was first registered in 2000.
It is running a 1.8 CVH from a Sierra.
Fully expecting it fail but at £15 and no retest fee - it was a bargain...
The Car failed the first time - one of the failures was Emissions

The Emissions Test result shows limits of max 3.5% for CO2 and max 1200 ppm for
HC.
It was ok on CO2 at 0.18% but failed on HC at 1475ppm

There was a mis-fire on Number 1 cylinder; traced to a faulty HT lead.
Changed the HT Lead set and resubmiited - it passed with 0.184% CO2 and 65ppm
for HC
The car runs better as well - LOL

when I took my q plate rickman for the test the tester answered the questions
as posed by the computer/analyser picked up the test probe, looked back at the
screen and saw it had already passed, he had answered the "visible smoke"
question. Does your 2+2 have a cat fitted?

As usual my Quantum was different again this year, back to meeting specific
figures rather than visible smoke.
  It’s different every year.
Initially it failed on CO (3.5%) but after i switched my magic switch on the
ecu (turns on closed loop) it passed, just.

No point in arguing with the guy in the garage, they can’t overide what the
computer tells them it should be nowadays.
You can’t even see the emissions figures until the end of the test and it
says pass or fail.

Seems it depends on if your Car is a Q reg or not and if it was registered
before August 1998 or not (SVA afterwards).

If it’s a pre Aug 1998 Q reg then it should be visible smoke only but a lot
of MOT testers can’t or won’t do this.
If it’s pre Aug 1998 non Q then the emission are CO 3.5%, HC 1200ppm.
If it was after 1998 then the emissions should be on the reg doc from the SVA
or IVA and it has to meet those.

I assume since your limits are lower than those above your car was SVA’d

Subject: [Quantum Owners] emissions 2+2 MOT

hi all, just another quick question,
MOT also failed due to emissions test, i cant find anything with past mot
certificates to prove that the engine only requires a smoke test, is the engine
old enough to qualify for that? it is the standard 1600cc CVH ford engine, dont
know exact age but somewhere between 1983-1989. failing that, does anyone know
if i could raise the limits for CO and HC's due to the age of the engine at
all? At the moment its pumping out 2% CO and 650 ppm HC which are both larger
than the limits on the test certificate (0.3% CO and 200 ppm HC), any help on
this topic would be much appreciated
  thanks
