Maybe worth checking the engine mounts too as on the third replacement
exhaust the sales chap said they crack because something else is wrong
most probably engine mount gone. Erm no... replaced them as that was the
fault that split the collared pipe. so when the third plain pipe failed
i took the mount receipts, expecting a fight but they refunded no
problem. the final replacement sourced from a different factors had the
collar and stayed fine till the car was sold years later.

Totally unsure if the XR2 is similar to the 1.1 mk1 but i had issues
with basic downpipes splitting within a few months below the manifold
clamp.
shopping around i found one the same as my rusted out unit that had a
strength collar just down from the manifold of 3 or 4 inches held the
manifold clamp captive.
Worth a consideration.
