The other Chris was referring to the accelerator pedal. That's taught me a new trick too, but I've never driven an autochoke car from cold. If this works you are probably on an autochoke, if not look for a know around the steering wheel cowel that you can pull out - you can probably pull it out 70-100mm. Then try starting the car from cold. If it starts well, but runs fast you are definitely on a manual choke. Once the car is started you can push the choke in a bit until the revs settle around 1,000rpm, possibly slightly more. Just remember that you have the choke out and once the engine is fully warm push it fully in, or you will use more petrol that you need.
