If you pump it the accelerator pump in the carb be be injecting lots of
extra petrol each time you press the pedal, so you are probably too rich,
hence the cutting out and smoke.
Just press the pedal once, and not quickly, then start the car.
Pressing the pedal is supposed to be needed to re-engage the auto choke.
You may find you do need to keep a little pressure on the accelerator for
the first 10 or 15 seconds.
Cars with carbs are always a bit of a pain (IMO).

Subject: [Quantum Owners] Auto Choke on 2+2
Me again! My car has an auto choke. I've looked around the steering wheel
and I couldn't see anything to pull out. Anyway. This morning (before I
started the engine) I pressed the accelerator pedal a few times and THEN I
started the engine. However. It cut out pretty much straight away. Am I
doing it right? Pumping the pedal before I start the engine, then start the
engine? I also get some smoke out of the exhaust. I take it that's normal
though? Cold morning's? Thanks again for all your help and advice.
