auto chokes do tend to be problematic with age, i prefer a manual
choke, no messing and starts on the button, if you can get hold of a
conversion kit this would be better IMO, the procedure i used with
auto chokes was to crank the engine with your foot to the floor on the
throttle (and clutch to reduce drag on the starter) and the second it
catches release the throttle, as jim says you should expect to feather
the throttle for the first 10 seconds or so
