Where abouts are you in the UK ?

Sorry for the late response!
Thanks for all of that info, Jim. It's good of you to take the time.
After checking, it seems the original donor was earlier than "L" reg
but (apparently) in quite good nick - not a write off.
On looking, there does seem to be a hole drilled at the fore end of
the off-side chassis member, roughly where I'd imagine the engine
mounting to fit. I was never sure if this was factory-drilled (and it
looks neat and precise enough) or made by the goblins who crammed in
the 1.6 Zetec engine (which, I find, /was /from an "L" or "M" -plate
Fiesta Ghia).
The inlet manifold is of silver alloy, the only black plastic bits
being the air intake duct running across the top of the engine and
then around to the after-market conical air filter, jammed down near
the battery.
As you say, I'd imagined that the Zetec would slot in without much
problem but they seemed to have managed to create one in this case.
Regarding the fuel vent pipe, it just dangles near the edge of the
fuel tank, occasionally smelling whiffy and reminding me that, every
time the tank pressure builds up, several pence worth of fuel are
simply lost to the environment. I know later models had an absorption
canister fitted under the front wing to which this pipe ran but I'd
not come across the system of it venting to the engine (which seems
sensible). I was under the impression that this pipe acted both ways
and allowed in air to replace fuel volume lost. If the pipe connects
to the engine, does it still fulfill this function?
As for power steering, I drove a diesel Fiesta for over 115,000 miles
without power steering and managed! That said, getting rid of it may
be more trouble than it's worth.
I think my biggest mistake was not joining the club sooner and being
clued up for my viewings of the car, or even persuading another club
member of experience to attend and pass sage opinion (which would
likely have been a loud "NO!" once they'd finished laughing).
I think my next move may be to try to attend an event, open the bonnet
and let the fettlers descend whilst I sit there writing down every
word, or else find someone who knows the H4 and is happy for me to
drive over for a "consultation".
I'll try and get some decent photos and try to post them.
Thanks, again.

Q1.
I suspect you may have a bit of a mixture.
The 1.6CVH wasn’t used in the Mk3 Fiesta as late as a L reg, it
had been replaced by the Zetec by then and only in the XR2I and
RS1800I, both 1.8’
The was a 1.6 CVH injection engine in the XR2i Mk3 Fiesta but it
was earlier than an L reg
Was the old engine fuel injected ?
The earlier H4’s didn’t have the holes for the Zetec engine
mountings the later ones did, the easier way to tell is to look
for the front mounting holes on the chassis rail.
If you don’t have the holes they can be drilled but you also need
an angled steel plate welded to the chassis rail (from memory).
Apart from that a Zetec from a Mk3 Fiesta should have been a
straight swap for a CVH from a Mk3 Fiesta, use the Zetec engine
mountings.
The lower engine mountings (on the cradle) are the same on both
engines, as is the gearbox.
I wonder one or the other of the engines was from an Escort and
they have used the escort top mountings.
Or, modified the CVH top engine mount to use on the Zetec, no real
issues doing this if it is done correctly, it takes 260bhp in my
2+2, and Matthews Zetec turbo in his 2+2
But, using only the rear top Zetec mount won’t work as it’s not
designed to handle forces in all directions, it has to have the
front mount as well.
If you can take some pictures we should be able to work out what
is what.
The engine should be straight and there should be no issues with
belt, cover or radiator clearances.
A thought, it’s not got a black plastic inlet manifold has it ?
Q2. Escort mounts are different, the basic engine block is the
same but the brackets and mountings are different.
If you engine is from an Escort you will need some of the other
castings as well to fit Fiesta mounts.
Q3. Sounds normal, as long as the vent pipe is clear it should be ok.
The vent pipe should be running up to a solenoid valve on the
engine on the Zetec so the fumes can be sucked into the engine.
I think the CVH just had the vent valve but otherwise no differences.
Q4. Most people are fitting the power steering, if you’ve not
driven a similar car without it you may change your mind.
My 2+2 is quite a shock nowadays after driving cars with power
steering.
I don’t think the non power steering engines had the automatic
tensioner, they were all manual adjustment on the alternator tension.

*Subject:* [Quantum Owners] H4 - Engine Location.
Firstly a Happy New year to one and all. It may be New, but I'm
keeping the receipt just in case.
Secondly, I've a few queries which I've been meaning to raise for
a long while and just never got around to, in spite of them being
pretty fundamental to driving pleasure. I'm hoping one of the H4
gurus may be able to shed light or offer divine guidance.
My H4 was built with a "regular" 1.6CVH engine from, I believe,
and "L"-reg Fiesta. It was then re-engined with a 1.6 Zetec in
order to provide the owner with power steering. However, there was
evidently some difficulty in siting the engine as I realise it's
been fitted slightly at an angle, so close to the off-side chassis
member that the belt cover has had to be left off. In addition,
the off-side front mounting which is present in the donor is
absent in mine, and this permits excessive slewing of the engine
on sharp left-hand turns and a truly unpleasant noise as one or
other pulley attempts to chew its way to freedom through the
chassis. (This led to a misalignment of the auxilliary drive belt,
corrected at some cost.) It can't be any good for the drive
shafts, either and may explain why the gear lever feels so damned
far away (and I have long arms). On the positive side, it has made
me a very considerate driver on left-hand bends. I've also noticed
that the off-side rear mounting, near the suspension location, has
two holes drilled in it, and I recall noticing the same thing in
photographs posted here of rust on a Quantum H4 chassis: is this a
standard arrangement? My engine uses the hole further back and
towards the edge of the vehicle.
Looking at it all, it seems that the radiator fan (from the
original engine) would obstruct the engine were it fitted
"straight", so Q1 is: does the Zetec have a slimmer radiator? I've
seen after-market electrical fans with depths of under 3", so is
one of these usually required?
Q2. relates to the missing front engine mounting. A scrapyard
search turned up no 1.6 Zetec Fiestas but one or two Escorts.
However, they seem to have a different mounting system. Are the
two interchangeable or were there specific Fiesta and Escort
variants of the 1.6 Zetec? Is there any reliable after-market
substitute for this mounting, as the Ford original is silly money!
Q3. relates to fuel tank pressurisation. I've noticed an
occasional hissing from the fuel filler cap, usually when the tank
is less than half full. Is this likely simply to be worn seals on
the filler cap or the neck on which it bears? The pipe from the
top of the tank to the valve strapped to the filler neck seems to
be open as blowing down it leads to pressure in the tank (cap
hisses). Or is it that the Zetec fuel pressures are different to
those of the 1.6CVH and some modification should have been made?
Q4. relates to getting rid of the power steering, which just seems
like a waste of horsepower to me. Is there a "standard" fix to
replace the power steering pulley with a guide pulley to maintain
auxilliary drive belt geometry and allow correct functioning of
the automatic belt tensioner (what a great idea! So much easier
then the system on a previous Fiesta I had which required torque
wrenches, crow's foot adaptors and three hands to get the tension
correct) ?
I really should have trickle-fed all of these in over the course
of the year but, there you go! Maybe I should book myself in for a
Quantum H4 Masterclass - will provide assistance in return for
enlightenment !
Kind regards, and thanks in advance,
Steve and The Blue Pig.
