Thanks Jim.

The original stopped working, I think due to corrosion.  I replaced that 
with a standard diode, can't remember the specifics, but that broke the wire 
where it enters the body, despite adding strength to the package wrapped in 
self amalgamation tape.  That lasted about a year.

The latest failure has lasted a couple of journeys, but I haven't taken it 
off the car to test - it may be a dead alternator though.

Will have to spend time over the weekend taking a good look.
