If a car has an older 'plate' then is it an issue? Mine is E reg, but registered as 2009 - Unlikely to be pulled I guess, but I'd still rather be legal in all instances. The bizarre thing is that the registration date doesn't have (in this case and many others I'm sure) any bearing on the suitability of the towbar or towing vehicle. Likewise, a type approved Fiesta (as an example) from May 1998 is the same as one from Sept 1998 (someone will now prove me wrong!), but are bound by dofferent rules - I guess the authorities have to start somewhere, and there will always be an overlap from some manufacturer. As always the law doesn't necessarily make sense, eg a light commercial vehicle doesn't need a type approved bar, but could be likely to carry a heavier load than a passenger car. "If your car was first used before" also conjures up lots of interpretations where a kit car is concerned - Most of my car was used before then! Anyway, in summary, the text I saw a couple of years ago said " a vehicle not subject to type approval doesn't require a type approved tow bar" or words similar, which isn't the same as an interpretation of "A type approved car requires a type approved towbar".

"If your car was first used before 1 August 1998, your tow bar doesn't need to be type-approved." So, if your Quantum was registered pre-SVA then it's not a problem, i guess that covers most Quantums. So if Eddie makes it clear that they are for pre-1998 Quantums only then he should be covered, i bought a towbar for my 1996 Mondeo that wasn't type approved but i could have easily put it onto a later car. If somebody buys one from Eddie and puts it on a later post SVA/IVA car is that his problem ? Non M1 vehicles, light commercial vehicles and private imports from outside the EEC do not need Approved Towbars; however, most car and some Light Commercial Vehicles such as vans commonly use the Type Approved Towbar.
