Thanks Jim I must admit that I was surprised that everything comes off that
wincy wire. I cut an inch off it where it had gone hard and soldered a new end
on taking care that the wire was not soldered at the join with crimp so as to
allow flex.
We have covered approx 75 happy miles since with no worries.
I expect trouble from what is essentially a 26 year old car.

If that's the small wire that joins into a much bigger red wire 9" down the
loom then it's actually a special fuseable link wire.
You can put a new crimp on the end but don't remove it completely, it
protects the loom against faults in the unfused wiring.
It does work, i've melted one.

Today I fixed the fault which turned out to be the small permanently live
wire that is connected to the starter main lead live from the battery which had
fractured and fallen off.
I wish alll problems were so easy to fix.
