I have also seen threads Here(?) and on other sites that describe using an
electrical power steering solution using parts from a Corsa

Subject: RE: [Quantum Owners] Fitting power steering to H4

I did this on my 1.8 Zetec H4 for the same reasons, probably about eight years
ago when my heart problems began. The parts were all relatively simple to
install with only minor movements of the engine required to fit belts etc. The
rack was probably the most awkward thing to change and here a professional car
lift would be preferred as opposed to doing the job on ramps as I did.

Sorry but by now I have no idea of the list of parts involved as mine were
provided by one James Herne, who had recently removed them all from a 1.6 Zetec
which from memory was possibly a Mk 3.5 Ghia, M316VJN, if you go to Mr Ford for
parts. There are extra idler pulleys, various brackets and a longer drive
belt. It is necessary to get a pump that does not leak so be a bit choosy when
looking at parts if there are signs of steering fluid on everything. The
pipework was no problem and did not encroach on existing items. As my loom
does not cater for this I did not connect the hydraulic switch to the ECU,
which enables a change in idle speed when cold I believe, but there has not
been a problem with idling.

This is well worth the effort as a) the steering is so much lighter and b) you
get less turns lock to lock thus making the steering far more sensitive and
this completely changes the nature of the car, giving it a far more sporty feel.

Good Luck

Hamish

Subject: [Quantum Owners] Fitting power steering to H4

Have recently acquired an H4 and find the steering excessively stiff . Can
anyone supply any information regarding conversion to power steering, (parts
required and

procedures involved ) ? Engine is 1.8 Zetec, car built in 1999 with mostly
new parts, so no donor-car information.

I am sure someone must have had this problem before, as my senior partner is
unable to drive it as it is !

Any help greatly appreciated.
