Good idea, just as an extra idea, many years ago i did something similar with 
sheets of clear printer plastic, print the design on with a coloured printer, 
make up the design in MS paint (though in sure you have access to something 
more professional) and stick that over the outside of the graduations between 
the black housing. then for this situation buy some of that plastic lens repair 
tape for indicators and put that directly behind each of the white bits on the 
inside of the housing backed with some aluminum tape to direct the coloured 
light through the white bits, in fact i like that idea so much im gonna do it 
straight after I've finished my wheel arch extensions.....
