Hi Derek,
I made 2 soft tops for my Calvy Mitchel over the years. I don't know
what machine you have, but mine is a Singer KI (IIRC) industrial.
Vinyl - more 'robust' and doesn't lose its colour, but very difficult to
sew, and it also changed size greatly depending on teh ambient temperature!
Double Duck - Easy to sew, and doesn't change size with temperature (much).
(I also made a tonneau cover and sidescreens using duck, the downside is
that it fades in the sun!
Have you seen the polyester? (I think that's what its made from) material
generally known as mohair? This appears to be similarly easy to sew
(although I haven't tried it - yet) but doesn't fade. It is also available
with an attractive herringbone inner pattern which may be good, but may also
lead to using more quantity of cloth to achieve a match). It is more
expensive than duck, but can be sourced from many places cheaper than others
(there is a British manufacturer called Boyriven, I think they call it
Rivenweave or something smilar), or I have seen it at Stoneleigh at very
good prices. Given the money saved by stiching your own, it would still be a
very low-cost hood if using this material.

Anyone got any experience about the problems or benefits of vinyl roof soft
top v double duck (man made) canvas? My original hood is coming to the end
of it’s life and I want to try and make my own:-) Vinyl is much cheaper and
comes in more colours and I fancy something unique - and why not? That is
part of why you do these crazy things. But is there any overriding
experience that says no, go for this type?
Also about the mouldings that go around the soft top clips to stop you
banging you head on them and getting a cut. Are they available still? Is
there something better?
