Everything is clear so far as the jack is concerned. I can rotate the wheel (slowly but evenly) with the tyre just clear of the ground so I don't think ovalisation could be the cause. Thanks for your response.

Wanting to take a closer look I jacked the car higher (to get a block or axle stand underneath) but found that the wheel was now impossible to turn. As far as I know everything is in order with the suspension etc so the wheel is not jammed against a wheel arch. Any suggestions on what is wrong, and how to correct it will be very welcome.
