Nigel,
I had the same problem, opened the switch and found a piece of plastic that
had broken off.
After removing it the switch worked fine again.
You can open the switch at the back.
Cut away the 4 molten holding pins - flush with the back.
How to keep it close after the repair is the question, you could use epoxy
or some kind of glue - in the 4 holes only so that you can open it again in
the future if needed.

Thanks for the inputs. Jim's explanation was a big help. No headlight
relays!! Rechecked switches and am pretty sure the wiper/ headlight switch
is faulty as there is no power on the black white wire between this and the
indicator stalk switch. I assume this wire is the headlight on wire that the
indicator stalk then uses to select main or dipped. Would appreciate
someone's confirmation. So presumably the headlight flasher gets its power
from the same live as the indicators.
So next question is does anyone have a spare switch they wish to sell?
